"So, when's the wedding?" is the first question every newly engaged couple hears, and often the hardest to answer. Your date affects your budget, your venue options, who can attend and even what flowers will be in season.

The good news is that you don't need to find the perfect date. You need a date that works for the two of you, your most important guests and your budget. Here's how to get there.

Start with the big questions

Before you look at a calendar, answer these together:

  • How long do you want to be engaged? Many couples plan for 12 to 18 months, but a smaller wedding can come together in six.
  • Who absolutely has to be there? Grandparents, a sibling overseas or a friend in the military may have dates that rule some weekends in or out.
  • What's your budget? Peak-season Saturdays cost the most, so a flexible date gives you more choices for the same money.
  • Indoors or outdoors? An outdoor ceremony narrows your options to the months with reliable weather where you live.
  • Any dates that mean something? The day you met, a grandparent's anniversary or a favorite holiday can be a lovely tiebreaker.

Pick a season

Fall (September to November)

Fall has been the most popular season to get married since 2015, according to The Knot, with September and October Saturdays filling first. You get mild weather in most of the country, beautiful color and a cozy, rich palette (think terracotta, mocha and deep green). The trade-off is competition: popular venues and photographers book their fall Saturdays a year or more ahead.

Best for: couples who want classic outdoor photos and can book early.

Summer (June to August)

Long days, warm evenings and school vacations make summer easy for families with kids. June is a perennial favorite. In the South and Southwest, July and August heat can be intense, so plan for shade, fans and an evening ceremony.

Best for: outdoor and waterfront weddings, and guests traveling with kids.

Spring (March to May)

Spring brings fresh flowers, softer light and a lighter feel, with sage, blush and ivory palettes that photograph beautifully. Weather can be unpredictable, so have a rain plan. Late May books up fast, especially around Memorial Day weekend.

Best for: garden weddings and couples who love florals.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is the quietest wedding season. The Knot reports that only about a quarter of weddings take place between November and April, and December is the least popular month. That can mean more open dates at your dream venue, though The Knot also notes that prices don't always drop just because it's winter. Candlelight, velvet and deep jewel tones such as emerald and gold make winter weddings feel especially elegant.

Best for: indoor celebrations, holiday lovers and couples who want more venue choice.

Saturday, Friday or Sunday?

Saturday is the most popular and usually the most expensive day of the week to get married. Friday and Sunday weddings can open up dates at booked-out venues and sometimes come with lower minimums, though savings vary by venue and region.

Think about your guests, too. A Friday wedding may mean guests take a day off work, and a Sunday wedding is easiest on a holiday weekend when Monday is free. Weekday weddings work best for small groups or destination weddings where everyone is already traveling.

2027 dates to know

If you're planning a 2027 wedding, these dates are worth checking before you commit:

  • Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday, February 14, 2027. Romantic, but restaurants and florists are busy all weekend.
  • Memorial Day weekend is Saturday, May 29, through Monday, May 31, 2027. Guests get a free Monday, but travel costs rise.
  • The Fourth of July falls on a Sunday in 2027, so Saturday, July 3, sits in a long weekend.
  • Labor Day weekend is Saturday, September 4, through Monday, September 6, 2027.
  • Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 25, 2027, and many guests will already be traveling to family.
  • New Year's Eve is a Friday, December 31, 2027, a fun choice for a party-style wedding.
  • Fun number dates: July 7, 2027 (7/7/27) is a Wednesday, and July 27, 2027 (7/27/27) is a Tuesday. Expect demand for these even on weekdays.

Holiday weekends make travel easier for guests but can raise hotel and flight prices. If many guests are flying in, send save the dates eight to twelve months ahead.

A simple way to decide

  1. Pick your season based on weather, budget and the look you love.
  2. List three to five possible dates in that season, including at least one Friday or Sunday.
  3. Check with your must-have guests before you fall in love with any one date.
  4. Tour venues with the whole list. Let availability and price decide between your favorites.
  5. Book the venue, then lock in the date. Don't announce a date until the contract is signed.
