Save the Date Wording: 40 Examples (Formal, Casual & Funny)

Copy-and-paste wording for every style of wedding, from black tie to backyard, with the details guests actually need.

Three save the date wording cards in chocolate, blush and ivory, each with a different style of wording

A save the date only has one job: get your wedding date onto your guests' calendars early. But a few well-chosen words also set the tone, telling guests whether to expect a black-tie evening or a barbecue with a dance floor.

Below are 40 save the date wording examples in four styles. Swap in your own names, date and city, and tap any example to copy it.

What to include on a save the date

Keep it short. Every save the date needs:

  • Both of your names. First names are fine; full names feel more formal.
  • The wedding date. Spell it out for formal weddings ("the twelfth of June") or use numbers for casual ones ("6.12.27").
  • The city and state. The venue is optional at this stage.
  • "Invitation to follow" or "Formal invitation to follow," so guests know more details are coming.
  • Your wedding website, if you have one, for travel and hotel details.

Leave out the ceremony time, registry links and RSVP requests. Those belong on the invitation.

How to write your own save the date wording

Read your favorite example out loud, then change one or two words so it sounds like the two of you. A few tips:

  • Match the tone of the wedding. Formal wording for a black-tie ballroom, playful wording for a backyard party.
  • Keep it under 30 words. Guests should be able to read it in a few seconds.
  • Use your wedding website for the rest. Hotel blocks, travel tips and the schedule all fit better online.
  • Proofread the date and city twice. Then ask someone else to check it once more.

When to send save the dates

For a local wedding, send save the dates four to six months before the date. For a destination wedding or a holiday weekend, send them eight to twelve months ahead so guests can book travel and time off. Send one per household, only to guests you are sure to invite, and only after your venue is booked.
